Eighth General Chapter

3 November 2017 | General Interest

On this unique occasion, almost the entire Congregation of Dominican Sisters of Eastern Australia and the Solomon Islands was able to meet in Sydney at the end of October. The ‘Kairos Gathering’ of eighty six sisters, held over three days, marked the commencement of the General Chapter. This time together was filled with vibrant liturgies and rituals, earnest discussion, great joy and adoption of many new learnings and understandings.

The Chapter theme was “See I am doing a new thing…” (Is. 43:19). Sisters celebrated their past 150 years with Gratitude, looked carefully at how they live their present reality with Passion, and embraced their future as Gospel preachers with Hope, confident that God is leading them into new expressions of what it means to be Dominican today.

After Mass of the Holy Spirit and assurance of prayerful support, delegates then moved on to Baulkham Hills for further discernment. Discussion centred around how Sisters might realise more effectively their missionary presence in the Church, the world and the cosmos. Inspired by their motto ‘Veritas’ and building on the four pillars of our Dominican tradition, Sisters committed to continuing to inform themselves, reflect upon, respond and give voice to the critical issues of our fractured world.

A new Leadership Team was then elected to facilitate this next phase of the Congregation’s journey:

Mary-Clare Holland OP - Prioress,

Councillors: Jennifer Gerathy OP, Loretta Arohikeni OP, Julianna Drobik OP,

Teresa Tebaia OP and Elizabeth Hellwig OP.
